ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN POWER SYSTEMS, tenure track
Energy is the biggest challenge of mankind. It is the basic prerequisite of any industrial activity, a necessity for the functioning of human communities and the necessary requirement for food production. As the population grows, the demand for energy is increased. At the same time, our planet is coming up against the limits of sustainability. Climate change has accelerated and raw materials are being depleted. To meet the above challenges, there is today a radical transition toward sustainable energy that combines smartness, flexibility and environmental performance. New energy systems will be a complex combination of central and local resources, including energy production and storage, and new, efficient and flexible loads. This calls for new thinking about primary energy sources, energy production, energy markets, energy transmission, energy use and customers as producer-consumers (prosumers).
Electrical power systems are at the focus of the above development. In research, the field of power systems combines the engineering of energy systems and electrical systems in order to produce new sustainable system-level solutions for renewable energy utilization and system integration. In the area of high voltage engineering, the focus is on developing new solutions for distribution and transmission networks and for their individual components.
We are seeking outstanding individuals who have demonstrated excellence in addressing the above challenges. As a tenure-track faculty member, you are expected to complement the expertise of the current faculty by bringing new ideas and perspectives into our community. You are also expected to teach power and energy system modelling and optimization as well as high voltage engineering, with the typical teaching load of two courses per year.
The position will be filled at the assistant professor level. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation (EEA) focuses on three research areas: Electrical Power and Energy Engineering (EPEE), Control Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CRAS), and Health Technology (HTech). In EPEE, we develop new methods, devices, and systems for substantially increasing the share of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, focusing on making renewables, energy storage, and digital services the essence of power systems. In CRAS, we develop generic methodologies and practices focusing on distributed and networked control systems, field robotics, intelligent robotics, robotic instruments, industry automation systems, and automation software for distributed systems. In HTech, we develop technologies for improved and predictive diagnostic tools and efficient therapeutic methods and offer new analytical techniques for basic medical research focusing on making medical solutions that enable personalized treatments, homecare and data driven clinical decisions. The department manages and has access to a substantial amount of research and education infrastructure and is committed to renewal and development of its infrastructure through internal and external funding.
Besides its participation in the School-wide doctoral education, the Department offers a Master’s degree programme in the above focus areas and is heavily involved in the teaching and education in other cross-disciplinary programmes as well.
