The Department of Human Geography with about 55 employees, 400 fulltime students and approximately 25 Ph.D. students combines tradition with modern and highly internationalized research and education. Geography has repeatedly been the highest ranked subject at Lund University, currently ranked 16th in the world and 1st among the Nordic countries according to the QS ranking of 2018. For decades, the department has been very successful in the competition for external research funding. In addition to being embedded in numerous national and international research networks, the department of human geography has close ties with a broad spectrum of departments and faculties at Lund University. The key areas of research and teaching at the department are economic geography, development geography, urban, landscape and social geography, and GIS. The department has a Human Ecology Division (with a doctoral program of its own).
Specific subject description
Research and education in human geography deals with social, cultural, political and economic processes of change and their spatial driving forces, expressions and consequences for people at different scales, whether local, regional or global.
The post comprises teaching and research in Human Geography, with a focus on planning and planning processes. The position is a tenure track position, with the share of teaching and administrative duties increasing over time. The first year is comprised of 50% government-funded research and 50% teaching and administration, the second year of 40% government-funded research and 60% teaching and administration, the third and fourth years of 30% government-funded research and 70% teaching and administration. Teaching is primarily related to the Bachelors program in Urban and Regional Planning, but the successful candidate is expected to be able to teach in courses and programs in the field of human geography broadly speaking. Teaching can take place in both English and Swedish, but supervision will be primarily in Swedish.
To qualify for appointment as an associated senior lecturer, you must have been awarded a PhD in Human Geography or have the corresponding research competence from a related field. Priority should be given to those who have been awarded a PhD or achieved the corresponding research competence within five years prior to the deadline for applications. Applicants must be able to demonstrate documented teaching and research competence in one or more fields of relevance to Human Geography and planning specifically. Candidates are assessed on the basis of their ability to generate high quality research and their teaching competence. The ability to interact with society and to inform people about research and development work is also taken into account, as is the ability to successfully compete for external post doc funding. Applicants are required to have teaching experience in English and reading proficiency in a Scandinavian language.
An associated senior lecturer shall be promoted, on application, to an indefinite-term post as a senior lecturer if he or she is qualified for the post and is judged to be suitable in an assessment of the application in accordance with the eligibility and assessment criteria laid down by the Faculty for promotion to senior lecturer. An associate senior lecturer may only apply for promotion once. An application shall be submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences within three and a half years of the start of the candidate’s employment.
The general assessment criterion is that the applicant must demonstrate strong progress in his or her ability to conduct teaching and research. The assessment criteria for promotion are in this case that the applicant has demonstrated:
• well documented research competence that is of significance to the subject and duties of the post. This includes a good documented national and international standing as a researcher. Particular importance will be attached to a documented ability to publish internationally.
• well documented teaching competence. Particular importance will be attached to documented skills in conducting teaching and supervision at different levels and to development of quality and breadth of teaching competence over time.
• progress in academic leadership through an enhanced ability to develop, lead and implement education and research and/or demonstrated leadership/commitment to duties for the department as a whole.
• documented ability to write applications for external research funding.
• good ability to interact with society and inform others about research and development work.
• other personal qualities of importance to carry out the duties of the post well.
• where appropriate, sufficient proficiency in Swedish to be able to teach in Swedish.

Research and teaching experience in one or more fields of relevance to planning is particularly desirable.
