Doctoral Candidate Position in Timber Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering at the Aalto University is seeking to hire 1-2 outstanding doctoral candidate in the area of timber engineering. The successful candidate(s) will perform research on the structural reliability in timber engineering, including aspects such as strength grading, development of more reliable engineered wood products and assessment of structural timber components.
The position is located in the group for Wooden Structures at the Department of Civil Engineering. The group for Wooden Structures is a newly established research group. Main research areas are structural reliability in timber engineering, timber grading, further development of engineered wood products & structural solutions and assessment of wooden structures. Applicants must have completed a Master’s or Diploma degree in civil engineering, preferably structural engineering. Due to proactive involvement in teaching, pedagogic qualities, and interest in passing knowledge and expertise to students is expected. Excellent social skills and open-minded attitude will ensure good embedment in the research groups and multidisciplinary environment at Aalto University. Fluent English, both written and spoken, is prerequisite. Strong background in at least two of the following areas is required:
– Timber engineering
– Structural reliability
– Structural mechanics
– Structural engineering
– Computational design
Contract and salary
The doctoral candidate position is contract-based; one-year contract is granted first, followed by possible extensions of another one-year and a two-year period depending on the achievements during the first contractual period. In a maximum of four years, the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation, 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits, 3) participate in teaching and 4) participate in further research collaborations of the research group. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. Applicants may also provide salary requirements. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health care benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
