The Research Fellow supports the Melbourne Waterways Research-Practice Partnership, a collaboration between the University of Melbourne (Waterway Ecosystem Research Group) and Melbourne Water, providing applied research and planning to improve waterway management. The role contributes directly to Partnership research and Melbourne Water‘s Waterways and Biodiversity Team portfolios, leading the translation of Partnership research into outcomes at Melbourne Water through developing and applying tools, policies and systems to support Healthy Waterways Strategy implementation, monitoring, adaptive improvement and reporting. Customisation of quantitative analysis, interpretation and communication of decision support will be a key focus of this role. The role will be based both at the Burnley Campus of the University of Melbourne (5 days/fortnight) and at Melbourne Water (5 days/fortnight).

About you:

Minimum Qualifications Required

PhD or awaiting results of PhD examination or conferral of PhD or equivalent in biology, quantitative ecology, environmental monitoring, natural resource management or a related field

Skills and Experience required to fulfil the position:

  • Strong skills in critical thinking and quantitative analysis with demonstrated experience in statistical and spatial modelling (using programming languages such as R or equivalent) and a strong foundation and understanding of GIS and proficiency in GIS software
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with excellent verbal and written communication skills (including technical reports and scientific publications)
  • The ability work both in research and an industry/government environment, to contribute in a team environment to improve processes, respond to various demands and manage multiple activities simultaneously to meet objectives and timelines
  • The ability to coordinate elements of projects that involve Melbourne Water employees and key researchers across a range of disciplines
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience, and possession of a current Victorian driver’s licence or eligibility to obtain one
